I have been a Navien tankless hot water heater guinea pig for 10 years, during which time I have spent thousands of dollars to repair and maintain these units. My first Navien died in 4 years and my second unit lasted only 6 years. On my Navien 240 A, a cracked heat exchanger made me switch to a good old hot water tank. Navien offered to replace the heat exchanger, but the labor to replace the exchanger was over $1,000, and Navien refused to pay for this repair or replace the entire unit. For me, both Naviens proved to be money pits and maintenance costs are prohibitively expensive. For instance, Navien expects that their units will be flushed every 6 months to 1 year at a cost of $300 per flush. Do the math - in ten years you will have spent $3,000. Now, if someone asks me about owning a Navien, I would tell them to run the other way and save themselves thousands of dollars. Sorry Navien, but your product is the second rate compared to a standard, time-tested, ordinary hot water tank. With a Navien your energy costs may be less, but in the end, you will pay many thousands more in repairs and maintenance.
